Industrial chemicals,
made by living
organisms.

Utah Biochemical is a research and development company pioneering biosynthetic production of industrial chemicals. We build biological systems that replace petroleum-derived processes with cleaner, greener alternatives.

Our Research

Transforming how the world makes what it needs.

Utah Biochemical is an independent research and development company focused on building biological production pathways for high-value industrial chemicals. Our work addresses critical supply chain vulnerabilities in major chemical markets by replacing conventional synthesis with scalable biological alternatives.

Our R&D program leverages synthetic biology, metabolic engineering, and enzyme design to build organisms that produce chemicals from renewable feedstocks.

Program 01

PFAS Bioremediation

Biological degradation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances using engineered microorganisms with native defluorination capability. Our platform addresses one of the most pressing environmental contamination challenges in the United States, targeting water supplies and industrial sites impacted by so-called forever chemicals.

Program 02

Biological Herbicide Replacement

Development of naturally produced compounds capable of replacing synthetic herbicides including diquat, paraquat, and glyphosate. Conventional herbicide use carries significant toxicological, regulatory, and reputational risk for the agricultural industry. Our program engineers microorganisms to produce naturally derived herbicidal compounds that achieve comparable efficacy against target weeds while meeting the safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements that synthetic alternatives increasingly cannot.

Program 03

Bio-Based Specialty Monomers

Engineering solvent-tolerant microbial strains for the production of specialty monomers used in polymer manufacturing and advanced materials. This program targets high-margin intermediates currently sourced exclusively from petrochemical feedstocks, creating a bio-certified supply chain alternative for materials manufacturers.

Program 04

Microbial Enzyme Discovery

Systematic screening and engineering of novel enzymatic activities from soil and industrial microbiome sources. Our enzyme discovery pipeline identifies biocatalysts with commercially relevant activity profiles and optimizes them for stability, selectivity, and yield under industrial fermentation conditions.

Biocatalysis Enzyme Engineering Industrial Fermentation Pipeline

Chemistry that works with nature, not against it.

Eliminating Toxic Processes

Replacing high-pressure, high-temperature industrial chemistry with biological processes that operate at ambient conditions and produce no hazardous waste.

Renewable Feedstocks

Our processes run on agricultural carbon sources, not petroleum. The same chemicals, from entirely renewable inputs.

Defensible Intellectual Property

Patent-pending biosynthetic routes that address critical supply chain vulnerabilities in major industrial chemical markets.
